Application (HTML) Outgoing President's Letter As the outgoing President of the Association for Veterinary Informatics, I've been very honored to serve in this role for the past year. We have transitioned through interesting times and will continue our journey into the next few years. It is my hope that we will do so in such a way that will impact many more veterinarians, veterinary related professionals and lay staff that struggle with informatics and computer related issues day-in and day-out. Our Association continues to evolve and move forward, slowly but surely. We are coming upon the 2nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the US and our group has struggled to define and somewhat re-invent itself over these last two years. Our membership is slightly down, and our active role in organized veterinary medicine as an organization is somewhat murky. However, we on the board have been trying to move ahead with a more clear definition and agenda as we move into the next 12 months. Over the past year, we've been working on a re-design the AVI newsletter, working toward a more useful website for members and non-members alike. Weve been working on ways the Association can provide it's members with more useful and timely information, and weve been investigating ways to increase the AVI membership base, especially with regards to private practitioners. We would like to become a clearinghouse of information for all veterinarians with regards to informatics, computers in practice and practice software related information. We need to increase the visibility of the group as a whole in order to accomplish these goals. We also want to continue to foster interest in Informatics amongst the student populations of the various veterinary colleges, both here and abroad. We would like to become more closely affiliated with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) if possible. However, even with all these lofty goals due to various health issues amongst some of the board members, including myself, we have struggled to make much happen over the last 12 months. For that I truly apologize. The association has been somewhat dormant on most issues for the last 12 months, but we hope to be moving forward again, as the next year is now upon us. continued, next column... |

Worth Convention Center Outgoing President's Letter continued... As your outgoing President, I am very pleased and proud to introduce our new incoming President for 2003-2004, Dr. Steve Pittenger of Houston, TX. Steve earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1995 from Texas A&M University. He currently practices at the Memorial -610 Hospital for Animals, in Houston. His areas of interest include nutrition, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, ultrasound, internal medicine and computer applications in veterinary medicine. Steve is also a member of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (serving as Chair of the Telecommunications & Informatics Committee); the Texas Academy of Veterinary Practice (serving currently as vice-president); the Harris County Veterinary Medical Association, where he currently serves as Past-President; the Veterinary Information Network; and the American Animal Hospital Association. He was named the Texas Veterinary Medical Association's Recent Graduate of the Year for 1999. Dr. Pittenger's e-mail address is pittenger@aol.com. What do you think of our web site? Please explore it, remembering that it is still a work in progress. More and more information will be added over the next few months hopefully. We do have to thank our official web person, Dr. Robin Starr for her hard work over the last couple of years. We hope to continue to work with Robin and utilize her expertise to further develop the AVI website as a useful tool and site for veterinarians and veterinary staff worldwide. Robins husband, Dave has been battling a serious allergic reaction to prescribed medications for the past few months and of course we all wish them both well, and future improved health. Also, I would like to mention our AVI newsletter. After many years of hard work by our previous newsletter editor, Dr. Ronald Smith of the University of Illinois, we have moved to a new format, whereby we are not mailing it out any longer via ground (snail or printed mail) but only electronically, via an html version. Dr. Pittenger and myself have worked on this first issue primarily and hope to move ahead pro-actively with a regular release of this up-to-minute html newsletter now that this, our first issue, is finally in your inbox. Thanks Ron for all your past assistance and hard work!!! ANOTHER REMINDER Our annual Talbot Symposium and the AVMA Convention in Denver is only a few days away and we have a GREAT program for everyone! Please plan on attending! See you in Denver this next weekend July 20th, 21st and 22nd! And remember our yearly AVI Business Luncheon this next Sunday, 7/20 in Denver, held during lunch on the day of the Talbot Symposium. See newsletter article for more information and luncheon reservations details. Sincerely, Paul M. Schmitz, DVM,
President |
